We designed a game on MIT app inventor and invited people to test it. The game is called The Mondrian Challenge. The idea is to provide people with 4 colors and 9 empty blocks for them to fill in.
Generally, most participants found the game easy and pleasing, and they did think and analyze before filling the blocks.
However, participants were confused with the point of this game. Initially this game is designed simply to provide users a tool to draw like Mondrian individually, but after the test, we found that actually if you put all these works together, people may understand the works of others and themselves via comparing and analyzing.
To improve this, we decide to change the game to a collaboration game in further version.
P.S. Also, it is quite interesting that the results are varied because the different pattern of different people's cognition. Generally, people with a science or engineering background choose to express abstract concepts such as symmetry in their pictures, while people with an art or design backgrounds use colors to maintain visual balance and harmony. There are also quite a lot of people choose to make shapes and patterns like letters, sun, flowers, trees.
And other Interesting Discovery:
i. Girls tend to like the color game more than boys.
ii. The white color means different thing for different people. For some it means possibility and hope, while for some it means blank, empty and lack of energy.
