Our idea is to revive and upgrade the traditional rainwater harvesting system into "Systematic household rooftop rainwater harvesting" and "Communal rainwater harvesting together with the collaboration of community. This can not only reduce flood hazards but also provide the harvested rainwater for domestic purposes. "URBAN WATER RESILIENCE can't be built by just one household, but it can be possible if we bring the whole community together"

❖Mainly due to poor drainage system & heavy rain

  1. Low infiltration because of the closely spaced building due to urbanization and lower sea level.
  2. Insufficient drainage system because of disposing of waste directly into the drains by the community and also poor drains services.
  3. Heavy rain: Because of the climate change, rainfall is more intense especially within the short period.
  4. Occurring of fluvial flood.

Develop  communal or household rainwater harvesting systems and use the harvested rainwater for domestic purpose.

Action Plan! 

  • Conduct socio-economic survey 

    • How the problems affect them.

    • How people are willing to improve their living environment.

  • Develop a prototype to estimate the collection efficiency

Steps to bring about change 

  1. Assessment/ socio-economic survey on the local community on how the problem affects them and their willingness to improve their environment.
  2. Design a prototype that would be the best fit to harvest rainwater for the study area.
  3. Negotiate with the house/ building owners and water distributors to install the rainwater harvesting systems in their compound.

  4. Install household/ communal rainwater harvesting systems.

Certain amount of rainwater will be collected & reduce runoff

[If we can install RWH systems in 50% of the buildings

  • 25% of the rainfall will be collected
  • 62.5% flood reduction

Water supply can get at

  • No cost for a certain period during for household RWHS
  • Lower cost at the communal RWHS

What is the user experience?

  1. Household rooftop rainwater harvesting system

It can be affordable for installing household rooftop rainwater harvesting system with the special finance scheme (instalment plan) although initial investment cost is high.

Goals

If we can install our system in 50% of the households in the project area, 

  • 62.5 % of flooding will be reduced yearly.
  • 25% of rainfall will be collected and can be reused for water supply.

       2. Communal rainwater harvesting system

Water will be supplied to consumers with 25% reduction of the original market price.

Goals

  • Flood reduction will be more than 62.5% as more rainwater could be harvested.

Overall Benefits

  • Reduction of flood hazards significantly.
  • Alternative way of water supply with cheaper price (25% reduction)
  • Create work opportunity.

Who has to do what. to make it happen?

To become a successful project,

 

Basic changes need:

  • To realize the direct and wider benefits of RWH systems by local gov and community

  • Willingness to install and maintain the system within the property (public building, houses)

Key partners:

  • Local government: To give awareness and increase willingness about the system to the community; To collaborate in the installation of the system at public buildings

  • Water committee: To connect the increase amount of water from the system to their current supply and sell the water at lower rate.

  • House owners: To install and maintain the household RWH system within their property

Who are the key partners to execute? Key partners to help others evaluate your value preposition?

  • Local government: To give awareness and increase willingness about the system to the community; To collaborate in the installation of the system at public buildings

What are the precipitating events?

Myanmar is the 2nd most vulnerable country in the world, in terms of vulnerability from climate change and extreme weather events.

Effects: Ground subsidence and salt intrusion

Almost all of water supply in the study area is from groundwater. Exacerbating facts:

  • Most populated township

  • Largest industrial park

  • Already experiencing high levels of salinity in groundwater

For climate adaptation and preparedness, need immediate action on

  • Flood reduction

  • Prevention of excessive groundwater withdrawal

‘Water Shop Committee’ initiated and supported by an international organization (Cordaid) who is currently distributing the treated groundwater to more than half of the population within the ward.

Physical Resources

  • Items and materials for the RWH system (eg, PVC tank, water filter, gutter, etc.)

Human Resources

  • Skillful labor work for RWH system installment.

Intellectual Resources

  • Development of user manual for maintenance of the system & identifying the most suitable filter type for the system
